  The effective training of operators of surface drill rig machinery in mining operations is essential for optimising productivity, improving safety and minimising operating costs. Mistakes made in the drilling cycle have extensive downstream cost implications for the mining operation. In light of this, the CYBERMINE Surface Drill Rig Simulator has been developed to provide for the training, re-training and evaluation of operators of this type of heavy equipment in a surface mining environment.
The CYBERMINE Surface Drill Rig Simulator operator views the simulated world on three high resolution, wide screen projected displays strategically located about the drill rig operator's cab to allow the effective execution of both drilling and propelling operations. The entire drill rig simulator cab is replicated to provide all drilling and propelling instrumentation and controls, correctly located about the operator.
The 3D virtual mining environment delivered with CYBERMINE surface drill rig simulators provides typical challenges, requiring the drill rig simulator operator to employ due care and skill whilst preparing, propelling and drilling in order to avoid equipment damage. During the propulsion and drilling cycles, the drill rig simulator operator executes all tasks as he or she would in the real equipment. Drill rig propulsion models realistically move and rotate the simulated drill rig, while accurate drilling module behavioural dynamics, interacting with simulated rock characteristics (hardness and drillability) provide a highly realistic drilling experience in which safety and productivity are vividly experienced.
The CYBERMINE Surface Drill Rig Simulator continually monitors and records operator actions and performance, together with adherence to safety procedures, accuracy of drilling to plan, correct equipment handling techniques and response to emergency situations and failures. The resultant performance reports together with the instructor’s after-action review capability provide a complete drill rig operator training and evaluation system, aimed at optimising operator safety and improving mine productivity.
Highly efficient and effective drill rig operator training is therefore realised with no loss of production and no danger of accidents, even in the most complex of emergency situations to which the drill rig operator might be expected to respond.
The CYBERMINE Surface Drill Rig Simulator range simulates heavy equipment from all major manufacturers such as Sandvik, Atlas Copco, P&H, Cubex and Bucyrus.
