Mining Simulator Specialist
International Mining - January 2009

Thoroughbred Technologies is a company reaching far beyond South Africa’s borders – a mining simulator specialist. Launching the latest in its range of CYBERMINE™ simulators, for use in the training of new locomotive operators, it presents an innovative and realistic training tool. The simulator was requested by three existing CYBERMINE clients, all of whom have placed orders for the new unit.

At the heart of the locomotive simulator is the cab, a lifelike replica of the actual equipment, with fully functional simulated instruments and controls. It is mounted on a motion platform and is surrounded by a wide field of view, high-resolution projection display system with surround sound audio. Control of all aspects of training and evaluation is exercised in real time from an instructor station. The entire system is housed in a well-appointed, self-contained 6 m ISO standard container, which also facilitates ease of transport.

The simulated locomotive, including engine, optional hoppers and guard carriage, operates in a virtual mine world consisting of tunnels, rails, loading points, chutes, tipping areas, battery bay and workshop. All are included to provide a realistic and accurate training tool, with the
operator required to exercise safe and correct techniques at all times.

Exercises may be configured to address various training requirements, including operations in areas of differing slopes, dealing with other vehicles and personnel in the tunnels, sub-system failures and advanced emergency situations. The trainee’s performance is continually monitored and recorded in terms of adherence to safety procedures, correct equipment handling techniques and response to emergency situations, failures and guard instructions. These performance reports together with the instructor’s after-action review capability, provide a complete training and evaluation system.

Thoroughbred’s complete range of CYBERMINE simulators include modules simulating LHDs, bolters, underground and surface drill rigs,
underground and surface haul trucks, dozers, wheel loaders, shovels, excavators and draglines.
