Skills Centre Leads Innovative Simulator Training with New Purchase
Mining Industry Skills Centre - April 2008

The Mining Industry Skills Centre has today announced an addition to its fleet of simulators with the purchase of a state-of-the-art simulator from South African-based modelling and simulation experts, ThoroughTec.

This new addition will give the resources industry access to a technically superior simulator which has never before been available to the Australian sector.

The simulator, a Komatsu 830e (electric truck) has excellent reporting capabilities, an advanced trainer interface and a fast console change-out, making it ideal for a variety of training situations.

The ThoroughTec simulator is the latest addition to the Skills Centre’s existing fleet of 18 5DT simulators, purchased in June 2006 using funds provided by the State Government.

The Mining Industry Skills Centre’s CEO Mr Derek Hunter said that the ThoroughTec simulator purchase is another step in the Skills Centre’s quest to lead the industry in innovative training solutions.

“By purchasing this simulator, we are ensuring that members of the Australian resources sector will have access to superior simulation training technology.  This simulator can be used in pre-employment training, operator upskilling and refresher programs, therefore giving industry organisations a chance to include an innovative and state-of-the-art training tool in their training programs.

“ThoroughTec have a range of underground simulators that currently aren’t available on the Australian market and we are excited at the prospect of increasing our capability to service the underground sector of the resources industry,” Mr
Hunter said.

FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES OF THE KOMATSU 830e

The ThoroughTec Komatsu 830E has some superior technological advantages.  These include:
•    Excellent reporting capabilities – The Komatsu 830e can generate reports around development benchmarks that are essential for training operators.
•    Advanced trainer interface – The flexibility, usability, the level of information return to the trainer and the lack of jargon makes the Komatsu 830e the best on the market
•    Fast console change out – The ThoroughTec simulator has a modular approach to its console change-out, making it easier for single-person operation.  It’s ideal for an expanding fleet as it allows interchangeable consoles on the base unit.

WHY THOROUGHTEC?

ThoroughTec  is currently a preferred supplier for major international mining companies and has substantial experience in other industries including defence.

“Prior to purchasing the simulator, we conducted extensive research into the simulation products currently available.  We also spoke to some of ThoroughTec’s current clients and they were extremely satisfied with the company’s products,” said Mr Hunter.

“In addition to their full range of hard rock equipment simulators, which can also operate from the base simulator we have purchased to support the Komatsu 830e, ThoroughTec have a unique approach to maintenance and support which we feel
will service the industry to the highest possible standard,” added Mr Hunter.

The team at the Skills Centre has received ongoing requests from the industry for this type of equipment.

“Our aim is to be the voice of industry for all matters relating to the training and skill development resources sector employees.  We understand the importance of ensuring we are providing the industry with the equipment and knowledge they need to create a sustainable workforce for the future,” said Mr Hunter.
