The effective training of operators of surface drill rig machinery in mining operations is essential for optimising productivity, improving safety and minimising operating costs. Mistakes made in the drilling cycle have extensive downstream cost implications throughout the mining operation. In light of this, the CyberMINE™ drill rig simulator system has been developed to provide for the training, re-training and evaluation of operators of this equipment in a surface mining environment.

The CyberMINE™ drill rig operator views the simulated world on three high resolution, wide screen projected displays strategically located about the operator's cab to allow the effective execution of both drilling and propelling operations. The entire operator's cab is replicated to provide all drilling and propelling instruments and controls, correctly located about the operator.

The mining environment delivered with the sytem provides typical challenges and obstructions, requiring the operator to employ due care and skill whilst propelling in order to avoid damage to vehicle components through collisions with exposed boulders, other vehicles and cordoned off blast areas. Constant scoring checks ensure that operators care for the integrity of existing holes in the drill pattern. Instructor injected faults such as critical equipment faults and engine files prepare operators to react calmly and professionally when faced with such emergency situations.

Simulations of third party monitoring and positioning systems are also available, thus training the operator in the operation of the specific tools used by the mine.

During the drilling cycle, the operator executes all drilling training tasks as he or she would in the real vehicle. Realistic drilling module behavioural dynamics, interacting with simulated rock characteristics (harness and drillability) provide a highly realistic drilling experience in which safety and productivity may be vividly experienced.
