Driving a train is a science and an art. Train drivers are faced with many different decisions and actions. They are required to know their track and to be prepared to react to any emergency condition that may occur en-route. In addition to this, the train driver is required to continually improve energy efficiencies and increase his productivity. Simulator based training is the best method to improve efficiencies and increase productivity and safety.

The CyberTRAIN simulation system is designed to simulate the complete characteristics of the entire train consist. This includes accurate mathematical modelling of the physical and dynamic characteristics of the locomotive, braking systems, bogies and draw-gear.

The student train driver sits in a simulated locomotive cab which contains a complete set of instruments and controls as found in the represented locomotive. The cab is mounted on a six degree of freedom motion platform which provides motion feedback to the student. Three large screen projected forward views and surround sound audio complete the picture to immerse the student in a highly realistic virtual environment. It is in this environment that maximal training transfer occurs. The student driver is able to operate the train oblivious to the fact that he is in a safe, controlled training environment. In addition, this controlled environment allows the instructor to closely monitor the student’s actions and performance under varying conditions, including injected emergencies and equipment failures. The instructor is also able to vary environmental conditions such as rain, mist and fog, and to change the time of day.

The CyberTRAIN simulator is housed in a standard 6m ISO container which is well appointed, insulated, air-conditioned and heated. Easy swapping out of different locomotive cabs allows railway owners and operators to train on their actual train types. Exact track sections and conditions are also simulated so that the student is trained in the same conditions that he will experience in the real world.

The Instructor is able, during exercise execution, to view a mimic display of all the instruments and controls in the simulated cab. He can also monitor strip graphs displaying information such as intra-train forces, wheel unloading etc. A complete After Action Review facility is also available, affording the instructor the option of seeking to a specific time and replaying for the student a portion of, or his complete exercise. During replay all functionality, such as instrument and control mimics, strip graphs and 3D visuals are played back. A complete reporting module is available for printing and storing exercise reports.
